there was just no way in hell i'd like this game. a male gaze-y self-insert sexist anime wife game where all the women are over-designed tropes that ultimately just serve as eye candy, with a smug pervert male lead at the center of them all ... it's not for me. it's antithetical to my tastes & wishes. but shockingly ... it's not
all bad. just mostly bad.
what i like about this game is more what it's trying to do, rather than what it's actually done. 2D sprites in a 3D world has always been appealing to me, ever since i was introduced to
ragnarok online as a kid: it's a cool, distinct look, which allows for both the convenience of 3D ( with things like camera work & dynamic environments ) while allowing for the unique artistic freedoms best ( and sometimes only ) achieved by 2D characters. when done right, these sorts of projects can be absolutely beautiful & compelling ... but as you can probably guess, i don't really think
time and eternity made this art style work.
it just feels cheap. environments are depressingly empty & void of life, making them horrendously boring to navigate. the animations on our playable characters -- the selling point of this Anime Game -- are unrealistic, clunky, and often times distracting, which felt bad from a gameplay perspective: walking doesn't feel good, combat doesn't feel good, the conversation cutscenes DEFINITELY don't feel good ... it's a dreadfully slow paced game where nothing happens & characters do fuck all. in a better game, this would be the perfect storm for an inspired character piece, but alas, none of the cast have grounded personalities, or motivations, or designs, or stories, or anything, really, to pull you in with. the worldbuilding is borderline nonexistant. it's just ... it's bleak. it's a bleak world,
time and eternity.
but i think the RPG system is ... cool. maybe. swapping between two characters that you don't have control of like a jekyll & hyde thing is fascinating, although not interesting in application here. skill trees are bland & uninspired, as is the equipment you buy & items you use. everything feels mostly here as an excuse for the game to exist, rather than coming from a place of gameplay inspiration. you know what i mean?
more importantly, though, is that combat is hellish & overwhelming, which is arguably the most important part of this kind of system. characters have casual conversations in a fight while loud as fuck sound effects blare & VFX flash around everyone on screen, whose authentic but painful low-frame animations further confuse & obfuscate action. i had a very difficult time understanding when you were supposed to dodge or parry attacks, simply because the animations were so muddied. it's a case of being too dedicated to an aesthetic & letting it get in the way of gameplay. if i spent more time with it, maybe i could've see past the fog, but ... i didn't want to ... it's not fun ...
it's got some convoluted romance system between you & the lead ladies, but i didn't really see enough of that to judge ( although i think i'd hate it if i saw more ). kind of the only reason this game isn't getting a 1-star review is that there's a level of hysteria & madness that i felt while experiencing it that was briefly entertaining. it doesn't feel real, somehow ... like i'm dreaming up everything as it happens. it doesn't make sense. and for a pretentious jerk like myself, i kind of like these unique -- albeit painful -- experiences with art. it's NOT good though. it's really not good.
