this game is very cool looking ... i didn't spend a lot of time with it, and i think in the future i'd like to watch a full playthrough someday to see the story, but ... it feels really, really dry as a video game.
pacing is very slow, and all the platforming i saw felt really sluggish & clunky -- i think this is partially due to how slow you move, but also due to the puppet animation style & how that transfers to game feel & control. it just feels like you're wading through mud, even if your actions don't necessarily Take a long time to execute, because of the number of frames your guy moves with + what those frames convey ... like there's not enough information on screen or something ...
and beyond how it feels, the actual platforming challenges are just ... not very distinct. i didn't feel like i was thinking trying to navigate, you don't really have any ways to engage with the world beyond climbing, jumping, and pressing A for contextual actions, and progress is linear & clear. in some ways, this is good, but i just really struggled to find something to latch onto to keep my attention.
pentiment is another similar title, a puppet-style game about Making Art, but
penitment's gameplay was not ... like ... game-y feeling, if that makes sense. it thought about what it wanted to say, then made a unique & fun way to navigate through those thoughts.
saviorless is just too generic & dull feeling, even with all the good it's got going on. but like i said, i think this game may have something fun to say about art, or stories, or games, so it would be nice to give it another shot in the future. for now, though, i'm going to put it down & move on to some other stuff.
