baby's first post: artfight 2023

i'm not the best at blogging or talking about myself, but i'd like to use this site to get more comfortable with that. i'm unsure how frequently i'll update this page ... but i hope to come back to it every now and then to periodically share with y'all on what's going on in my life, as well as any major milestones or changes to the site i've made.

if you want to see nitty gritty changes as they happen, and you have a neocities of your own, you can follow my site via neocities' built-in feed! but if you just want to see summaries of updates, you can simply check back into this page every now and then. :~) i may even make an RSS feed to make said checking-in even easier ... we'll see ...

anyway ... let me start my first entry off on a fun note: let's talk about artfight!

if you aren't aware of what artfight is, let me quickly explain: it's a community of artists who, come every july, get together to suprise each other with fanart of each other's original characters through "attacks" ( art drawn BY you ) and "defenses" / "revenge" ( art drawn FOR you ). i was introduced to it during the middle of the event last july, so i didn't get to participate ... but this year i did!

i've always been a little insecure about my art and my ability to create OCs -- i feel i lack creativity, despite having enjoyed drawing and fiction my entire life -- so i was a nervous about putting myself out there. but i drew quite a lot! most of my free time and energy was put towards making other folks art this month, in fact, but i gotta say ... i don't feel tired at all. i had expectations that there would be a bit more back and forth than what i got, and i'll admit that kind of disappointed me ... but i was still pretty motivated from start to finish. :D

i don't want to sound ungrateful though. i got some amazing, beautiful drawings from complete strangers of characters i love, i did something that felt fulfilling and made a lot of people happy, i drew more than i have in a long time ... i'm glad i did this, i'm so thankful to everyone who drew something for me or left me a kind message, and i'm really looking forward to next year's fight.

i've missed online experiences like this which encourage so much community collaboration and creativity. the last thing like this that i did was a fashion zine two or so years ago, which ended on a pretty sour note ... so this has been a long-needed palette cleanser for me.
